About This Quiz

While the term "emo" - or sometimes "emocore" - may have initially started as an insult to a new branch of hardcore, the term stuck and has produced seminal bands for several decades. The roots of emo can be traced back to the mid-'80s hardcore scene around Washington, D.C. Bands began experimenting with emotionally charged lyrics and unique guitar riffs. Emo soon became a force to be reckoned with across the West Coast; the music was here to stay, and detractors could not deny the influence emo was having on rock music.

By the late 1990s, emo really came into its own. Bands borrowed from the mantra of punk rock, embracing rebellion and an underground movement to expand their sound. Bands would tour together and crash on each other's couches. They were able to get their music out to the masses of eager young fans looking for new sounds. Each generation of emo bands borrows from their predecessors to tweak the sound. Bands like Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance, Panic! at the Disco, Jimmy Eat World and Avenged Sevenfold continue exploring the unique musical genre.
